Events – What to Expect

Pitchers

  • Side bullpen session (LHP first, then RHP – numerical order from low to high).
  • Warm-up/get loose.

  • 16 pitches (4 fastballs-2 breaking balls-2 change-ups; 3 FB-3 BB-2 change-ups) or 3 minutes (whichever comes first).

    • Doesn’t sound like much? This takes every bit of 3 minutes and is roughly equivalent to a typical inning (14-18 pitches).

  • IMPORTANT: Don’t rush yourself, but keep a good pace so you get all of your pitches in and help us keep things moving.

  • What is evaluated? Mechanics, arm action, arm strength/velocity (with radar), movement, quality of breaking pitch, ability to locate.

Catchers

  • Numerical order from low to high
  • 6 throws to second base (best time listed on website).

  • Pop time” measured with stop watch (a good time for college is between 1.90-2.10). Also, velocity usually taken with radar.

  • Simulate stolen base situation.

    • Stay down and back behind the plate (i.e. don’t cheat/treat it as a pitch-out).

  • What is evaluated? Arm strength, quick release, receiving/soft-hands.

60 Yard Dash

  • Position players – numerical order from low to high.
  • Catchers in session 1, IF/OF in session 2 (pitchers only run if they are also signed up as position player).

  • 6.80 – 6.90 is Major League average for the 60 yard. Anything under 7.00 is very good for college. 7.00 – 7.30 is a good time to shoot for. Obviously, foot speed is less important for good defensive catchers and power hitting corner infielders and corner outfielders.

  • What is evaluated? Foot speed.

Infield

  • 2B, 3B, SS all field from SS  (numerical order from low to high).
  • 8 ground balls

    • 3 right at you

    • 2 to your left (towards 2B)

    • 2 in-the-hole (towards 3B)

      • IMPORTANT: back-hand these 2 deep in-the-hole, wait on them if you have to. Show your arm strength here.

    • 1 slow-roller: charge, scoop/bare-hand and come up throwing. This play shows coaches athleticism.

  • What is evaluated? Soft hands, quick feet, fluid actions, arm strength (radar), arm action.

First-basemen

  • Numerical order from low to high
  • 6 ground balls
    • 3 right at you (start off the bag & throw to 3B)
    • 3 double plays (start on the bag, throw to 2B and get back to the bag to complete DP )
    • What is evaluated? Soft hands, quick feet, fluid actions, arm strength (radar), arm action

Outfield

  • Numerical order from low to high
  • Field 5 – 8 ground balls & one-hop line drives and throw to home plate.

  • What is evaluated? Body control, quick release, coordinated throwing, arm strength (radar), arm action.

Batting Practice

  • (Lefties first, then Righties – numerical order from low to high):

  • Catchers in session 1, IF/OF in session 2 (pitchers only hit if they are also signed up as position player).

  • 8 – 12 swings

  • Using a wood bat is a plus (if you feel comfortable with one).

  • What is evaluated? Hitting mechanics, balance, bat speed, bat control, power, hand-eye coordination, looseness (lack of tension).
